Don’t Delay!

Susan Baumgaertel · March 2, 2022

It likely comes as no surprise that many people have delayed getting primary and preventive care since before the pandemic started. Well, that’s now two years ago!

There are so many things that need our attention on a daily basis ranging from the mundane (grocery shopping) to the existential (war). It is easy to just keep putting one foot in front of the other and let some things slide.

I am here to remind you not to let your health care slide!

Important for everyone of every age, this is especially important for those in peri-menopause and post-menopause.

Here is a short list of some items you may need to attend to:

  • Breast cancer screening – mammogram
  • Cervical cancer screening – Pap
  • Colon cancer screening – colonoscopy
  • Skin cancer screening – full skin exam
  • Screening for diabetes, high cholesterol – blood test
  • Screening for high blood pressure – BP check
  • Dental care and cleaning – see your dentist
  • Vision screening – see your ophthalmologist
  • Osteoporosis screening – DEXA scan
  • Immunizations

Not all the above apply to everyone and there are other items not listed that pertain to some on an individual basis, but this is a good start for most.

Another aspect of preventive care is medication management. If you take daily medications & supplements, many require periodic lab monitoring – such as kidney function, liver function, blood counts, lipid levels and the like.

There are other tests that may also be advised by your primary physician to consider – again, based on individual health profiles. And, please don’t forget about your mental health!

For those who live in Washington state, if you are interested in my support for staying healthy you can visit myMDadvocate and check out my services.

Need more data? Consider this recent article from Helio: “Many patients in US continue to face pandemic-related delays in primary care.”

Just remember: self-care is the Golden Rule, so you can care for those around you and stay healthy amidst a wide array of increased physical and mental stressors.

I urge you to schedule your checkup now – don’t delay!
