I’m already misty-eyed as I think back to yesterday and the launch party for my book, “The Menopause Menu.” In a word, it was perfect. Truly!
It was not perfect because it was attended by hundreds—about 30 showed up. It was perfect because it was intimate, meaningful, supportive and with lots of great conversation.
The oldest and youngest were both men, in their early-80s and mid-20s. Yes, they both bought books—and, no, they are not related to me! The woman who drove the longest distance traveled from Sequim, a trip that includes a ferry ride.
I discovered that my book appeals to women of all ages, including many who are well past menopause. Why? Because they can share this wisdom with younger women who are friends or family members. They can reflect on their own journey and learn things that still apply to them. They can appreciate the artful coffee table book design, including recipes. And, they can glean medical tips for unexpected “repeat menopause” symptoms in the context of cancer treatment.
As the party progressed, people came and went. All bought books and took turns sitting at the signing table for a nice chat. I heard snippets of life stories: leaving toxic workplace, retirement, spouse had 5-vessel bypass, recent fun vacation, book club, new relationship, living with parents, looking for a job, weight loss, hip fracture, parenting fun, great safari trip, long work day—a true slice of life.
There were many hugs given and pictures taken. Wines, cheeses, Marcona almonds and grapes were paired with vegan blueberry and cornbread mini muffins. Surprise flower arrangements arrived with perfect timing. The gift basket door prize was won by a naturopathic doctor!
Upon request, I did a reading from chapter 15, Chronic Disease Considerations, and was humbled by the lively group discussion that ensued.
My sleeves are now rolled up for the myriad podcasts and livestreams that are happily competing for space on my calendar. I’m also looking forward to a book signing event at my local farmer’s market, and other in-person events.
Yes, I’m delighted that my book is doing well on Amazon. But, there is no replacement for the personal satisfaction that comes from meaningful human interaction and collaboration.
Thank you to everyone who made this event so special!
